Despite the millions of excuses we tell ourselves, it’s clear weight gain is prevalent in the USA.

According to an article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association in January 2010, a large-scale study showed the prevalence of obesity was 32.2% among adult men and 35.5% among adult women. About ONE THIRD of the population is obese…not just over-weight, but technically obese.

So what is the technical definition of overweight and obese? For adults, an easy way to determine overweight and obesity is to use weight and height to calculate a number called the “body mass index” (BMI). BMI is used because, for most people, it correlates with their amount of body fat.
• An adult who has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight.
• An adult who has a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese.
For Example for someone 5’9″ tall
124 lbs or less then BMI = Below 18.5 Underweight
125 lbs to 168 lbs  then BMI = 18.5 to 24.9 Healthy weight
169 lbs to 202 lbs then BMI = 25.0 to 29.9 Overweight
203 lbs or more then BMI = 30 or higher Obese
Body Mass Index Calculation
So don’t guess, or listen to your excuses or Mom telling you it’s just baby fat.
Calculate your own Body Mass Index
Here’s the formula:
[weight in pounds/height in inches]2 x 703
Calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703.
You can link to the US Center for Disease Control web page for an online calculator of BMI.
You just plug in your height and weight and it does the math for you!

Facing the Truth
Now that you’ve faced the truth about your weight, let’s do something about it.
You’ve tried the diets, and clearly dieting is not the answer. Maintaining weight stability is a lifestyle change.

Change to:
• Eating little or no sugar and starch
Yes, this means muffins, bread, toast, cookies, cereals, and other foods made with whole grains. While whole wheat or whole grain is better than white processed flour, eating large amounts of them will not stabilize your weight.
Replace sweets and desserts with fresh fruit
• Switching to water from soda, cola and to tea from flavored lattes
• Downsizing your portions
use smaller plates, don’t go back for seconds
• Eating lots of veggies
and by veggies we don’t mean potatoes, even if they ARE sweet potatoes!
Eat lots of green veggies like spinach, broccoli, green beans, and cabbage
• Reducing trans and saturated fats
Stick with olive oil …replace sugary salad dressing with just olive oil and vinegar
• Exercising daily
it’ll also take your mind off of eating
